What Is IT Asset Disposition?
IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) is the structured process of retiring, sanitising, and responsibly managing end-of-life enterprise technology. It covers everything from servers and storage arrays to laptops, mobile devices, and networking equipment.
Done correctly, ITAD achieves three goals simultaneously: protecting sensitive data, meeting regulatory obligations, and recovering residual value from retired assets.
Why ITAD Matters More Than Ever
The average enterprise now manages thousands of endpoints. When those assets reach end-of-life, they carry risk — residual data, hazardous materials, and potential regulatory exposure if not handled correctly.
Key drivers pushing ITAD up the boardroom agenda include:
- GDPR and data protection regulation — Failure to properly destroy data on retired hardware can constitute a data breach, with penalties up to €20 million or 4% of annual global turnover.
- Corporate ESG commitments — Investors and regulators increasingly scrutinise e-waste. ISO 14001-aligned disposal is no longer optional for large enterprises.
- Hardware value recovery — Commodity prices mean that well-managed remarketing can return meaningful working capital against capex spend.
The ITAD Lifecycle
A properly structured ITAD programme moves through five stages:
- Collection and logistics — Secure transport from site to facility, with chain-of-custody documentation at every handover.
- Inventory and grading — Serial-level asset capture, functional testing, and cosmetic grading to determine disposition path.
- Data sanitisation — Wiping to NIST 800-88 or HMG Infosec Standard 5, or physical destruction for media that cannot be wiped.
- Disposition — Remarketing to secondary markets, component harvesting, or certified downstream recycling.
- Reporting — Certificates of data destruction and recycling certificates issued per asset, forming a complete audit trail.
Choosing an ITAD Partner
Not all ITAD providers are equal. When evaluating a partner, look for:
- Certifications: ISO 27001 (information security), ISO 14001 (environmental management), and NIST 800-88 compliance as minimum baselines.
- Serialised reporting: Avoid any provider who cannot give you a per-asset certificate of destruction. Aggregate reports leave compliance gaps.
- Downstream visibility: Ask where non-remarketed material goes. Responsible providers will name their downstream recyclers and hold their own certifications.
- Insurance and liability: Confirm that data liability transfers to the ITAD provider upon collection — and that this is contractually documented.
The ReCircle Approach
We operate from certified facilities in Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Brighton, with a partner network spanning 20+ countries. Every asset we process generates a serialised certificate. Our 98% landfill diversion rate reflects a genuine commitment to circular economy principles, not a marketing claim.
